On 14 June 2009, James Edward Bell “Jim” beloved husband to Danielle and father of beautiful daughters, Stefanie, Bianca, Luisa and Renata, passed away in the palliative care unit of the Mayo Clinic hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, after a courageous four month battle against an ugly strain of cancer.

On November 20, aged 105, Mabel Sylvia Clarke, the neice of Nelly Bay's first permanent European settler, William Bright, passed away at her home in Bristol England. Following is Islander Charlie McColl's obituary to Sylvia which shows that although she lived so far away her heart was always close to Magnetic Island.

Brian Robinson demonstrates an eclipse

Magnetic Times received the sad news recently that a great friend of Magnetic Island, a man who lived on the Island with his wife Jill in the winter months of the 1990s, had passed away last week. He was Brian Robinson and, as you will read, he was an exceptional Australian whose astonishing contribution to science cannot be over estimated. In 2000 Magnetic Times produced a Community Close-Up story about Brain and his extraordinary life. In memory of Brian we have reproduced that story.

I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents,scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
