Magnetic generosity continues to flow

Anne Cole with a Dr Andy Lewis photo which attracted strong bids Magnetic Island has a proud reputation as one of the most generously spirited communities in Australia. We first saw that some years back when Meg Brown’s Biggest Morning Tea for cancer research topped the takings Australia wide. More recently we dug very deep for a small boy needing expensive back treatment. Last Saturday night we showed that Magnetic generosity could travel around the world when locals and friends gathered to raise almost $5000 for desperate people who have lost everything in Syria.

The night was held at instigator, Anne Cole’s place in Nelly Bay where about 70 locals and friends from Townsville filled Anne’s home with great middle eastern food and loads of items to auction.

Peter Jackson displayed a new and deft talent as an auctioneer while other items were silently auctioned on the various tables along with the re-appearance of the Big Cuppa’s famous buck-raising bats which were sold fast and wide by Bat Gals Anne Kearney and Pen Sheridan.

Items as diverse as mix masters, original ceramic art by Jenny Mulchay, a rare watercolour by Peter Lawson, finely decorated ethic skirts, dive watches, and loads more where up for the highest bidder.

The Aquapella Choir added musical power and passion to the evening with five songs while Sara Shaw and Chris Copping enhanced the steamy atmosphere with some sultry soul. And, just for good measure, Anu Grace from Townsville brightened the room with vibrant, island-style, ukulele numbers.

But the event was about helping people in great need and Dani Ceccarelli who grew up in Aleppo (read here) read a special message from her contact in Aleppo who cannot be named for safety reasons.

Just the fact that you are all thinking of us
means the world to us. We are a local team
of volunteers working under the protection
of the Jesuits, made up of people from all sorts
of ethnic and sectarian backgrounds. Our
charity work is targeted at the most vulnerable
in society, regardless of any religious or political
affiliation. Thank you for your effort
and we wish you the best.

It was a night for all to remember fondly. Magnetic Islanders doing what they are good at: partying on and being very generous at the same time.

By this morning the tally, and more is still expected from far flung contacts, was $4,958.00

Well done again Magnetic Island!

A great night. A wonderfully generous community and a very worthy cause. Thank you Dani, Anne, Peter, the bat-girls and all others who pulled such a remarkable auction together.
