Magnetic Buddhists to celebrate 10th Vesak

Vesak on Magnetic Island Magnetic Island Buddha Dharma, Magnetic's Buddhist group, will celebrate ten years of practice on Magnetic Island this Thursday evening when Vesak or the traditional Buddhist celebration of the birth, enlightenment & final passing of the historical Buddha, will be observed.

Magnetic Buddha Dharma was formed in 2003 by a small but dedicated group of Islanders who wanted to practice meditation.

According to one of the group, Helene Rankin of Nelly Bay, "MBD is a non-sectarian Buddhist group which, over the past 10 years, has invited teachers and spiritual friends from a range of Buddhist traditions to visit the island and share teachings and their own experiences."

Such notables include Lama Choedak Rinpoche, a Tibetan meditation master, Ellen Davison, A Diamond Sangha Zen Teacher, and many nuns & monks, most notably, recently, Jason the "walking monk" who spent his 'Rains Retreat' on the island.

This year's Vesak will see the return of Lama Choedak Rinpoche who will be giving a talk. The evening will also include traditional chanting and rituals followed by supper.

"Magnetic Buddha Dharma has offered meditation classes and free access to Buddhist teachers and meditators and, being non sectarian, the Dharma respects all spiritual traditions and has been delighted when visitors to the Island from a variety of faiths have chosen to join the group at their regular Sunday Session," said Helene.

Magnetic Buddha Dharma will celebrate their 10th Anniversary at Vesak on Thursday 16th May, 7- 9pm, 27 Wansfell St Picnic Bay.

Offerings of incense, flowers, and vegetarian finger food will be appreciated.

Everyone is welcome!

It's 14 years since I last visited Maggy. I am shocked by Nelly Bay and saddened. It is insensitive, ugly and juxtaposed to the essence of Maggy. I embrace progress in general, but this is poorly conceived and executed. Shame.
