Fair raises $15,000 for school

Early showers couldn’t keep crowds away from the Magnetic Island State School Community Fair last Saturday when more than 1000 people helped raise around $15,000 for the school on the day through raffles, amusements, food and stalls.

The popular secondhand shed was teeming with bargain hunters early as was the cake stall for those keen to get their hands on some home baked goods.

Fair coordinator Guy Tickle said traditional attractions such as face painting, the plant stall and the chocolate toss helped pull in the funds alongside amusements brought in especially for the day including the giant inflatable Batman slide and gladiator duelling.

“We really tried to ensure we offered value for everyone this year and it was terrific to see the adults able to enjoy a coffee and cake under the trees while the children played and enjoyed themselves,” Guy said.

“Overall I think there was a great atmosphere and that really helped us reach our fundraising target.

“All credit should go to our dedicated parents and teachers who contributed so much time, money and effort to making the day a success. We also could not have done without the many, many island businesses who generously donated prizes for our raffles.”

All money raised from the fair will be combined with a grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund as well as money raised through the fun run held earlier this year to provide additional resources for the school, including new shade sails over the recently installed playground.

What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents, scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
