Council offers storage shed to Men's group

The Magnetic Island Men’s Shed will soon have an actual shed after Townsville City Council's Community and Culture Committee. last week, approved its use of a council facility.

The community group will have access to a 6x6 metre shed in Horseshoe Bay that is no longer required by council.
Committee chair Cr Sue Blom said council was pleased to assist the group that provides an important network for local men.

Magnetic Island Men’s Shed spokesperson, Mr Al Jacob told Magnetic Times, “We are very pleased with the Council decision to allow the Magnetic Island Men's Shed to use the existing 6 x 6 metre shed at the Sports and Recreation Facility at Horseshoe Bay.  We have had several generous donations of tools and equipment from Island residents and storage space was becoming a problem.”
“The Men’s Shed Association is such a great initiative that provides health, well-being and social support to many Australian men,” Cr Blom said.
“These groups require facilities that allow them to establish a safe and friendly work environment where its members can contribute to meaningful projects and give back to the community.
“The group currently meets in the Magnetic Island Recreation Centre building adjacent to the land but were seeking a secure location to store its tools and equipment.
“Council is please to provide a location where the group can continue to establish itself into the future.”

“Whilst our storage problems are now solved, we still need to work towards acquiring a fully functional workshop  where we will be able to provide the community with all the benefits that Men's Sheds have been shown to bring to local communities around Australia,” said Al Jacob.

Great news! And good to see Council step in so quickly to ensure community based use of a community asset. I hope that will continue with the Sport& Rec Club building, in its turn.
