It isn't just Easter this weekend
Its a strange mix of events this weekend as Christians observe the Easter rituals and the wider population remember the fallen during ANZAC Day. Then, in between, the Arcadia Surf Lifesaving Club plans, after many thwarted attempts, to hold their much awaited Ken and Barbie Beach Ball.
On Good Friday the Uniting Church will hold their service at 9am at their hall in Turnbridge Street Nelly Bay where they will also hold their 9am Easter Sunday service.
St Margarets Anglican Church at Endeavour Road, Arcadia, will be holding the following services: Maundy Thursday at 7.30pm this Thursday April 21 where there will be a Holy Communion and Washing of feet; Good Friday at 9am Stations of the Cross and on Easter Sunday at 9am they will conduct Holy Communion. On Sunday 24th at 7.30pm (ANZAC Eve) St Margarets will also be holding a special ANZAC Eve Memorial Service.
The Catholic Church which hold holds its services at St Joan of Arc in Cook Rd Arcadia will hold a Good Friday service at 3pm and an Easter Saturday Vigil mass at 5.15pm.
Magnetic Island Community Church holds its services in the Picnic Bay Mall opposite Sunbirdz Cafe at 3pm on Sunday. For more information call: 0458158185.
With Anzac Day and Easter clashing this year, the MI RSL-sub Branch advise that, "the 2011 Dawn Service will be more informal".
Spokesperson, Peter Safe said, “We will have a reduced military presence this year, this will allow our troops to have a well-earned rest, following their commitments to the clean-up of the floods and cyclone Yasi, without breaking their leave for ceremonial duties.
“Our wonderful volunteers, who assist us each year, will also have the chance to get away for a break, following the clean-up from cyclone Yasi.”
The advised changes for the ANZAC Day commemorations are as follows:
*There will be no early morning ferry service from Townsville this year. Anyone *wishing to attend the Dawn Service will need to be on the island prior to the 25th.
*The ferry service will be running to their normal timetable for anyone wishing to attend the services in Townsville.
*Breakfast and drinks will still be available at the RSL following the service.
0500 hours Marchers will assemble at the RSL hall ready for the Parade step off to Alma Bay at 0520.
The service will follow normal procedure, commencing at 0535.
Finally, the Arcadia Surf Lifesaving Beach Ball returns to the basketball Court next to the Clubhouse at Alma Bay on Saturday night April 23 starting at 6.30pm and running until midnight with music, dancing and dinner for just $30.
