NYE “generally good”

Happy New Year Magnetic Island. And a reasonably happy new years eve period it was, according to Magnetic Island Police

Firstly the expected Facebook party planned for Alma was thwarted with Constable Ben Costello describing the non-event as “a fizzer”. This was most likely due to the very heavy police presence at the Bay and the intercepting of under age alcohol carriers coming to the Island through the afternoon.

In all approximately 6 litres of spirits where confiscated and emptied out along with 3 cartons of beer and 3 cartons of UDL with 16 infringement notices served to minors in possession of alcohol.

The policing at Alma Bay and expectation of it however led to another Facebook open party being posted for Picnic Bay on Friday. A brawl erupted at Picnic later into the evening and a local man was charged for assaulting police but according to Constable Costello, there were no serious injuries.

The Magnetic Island Police station at Picnic Bay also suffered a broken window to a storage room on its southern side. Police only noticed the damage some time later and are, “most interested to hear anything from the public” on this incident.

Perhaps encouragingly, just one driver, a tourist, was charged for driving under the influence but with a fairly high reading of 0.13.

Due to the policing it seems that lots of people began roaming the Island’s streets and residents will be only too aware of the usual damage caused by bored and alcohol-fuelled party seekers. Rubbish was strewn across roads and at the Nelly Bay Carpark. The former Alma Den resort’s swimming pool - already bright green with algae - was even less of a pretty sight after revellers dumped plastic furniture into it and tossed Bundy, beer and UDL tins along with a fire extinguisher about.

At the Rocky Bay lookout a van was found in the morning with its back window smashed and various items strewn about and the occupants gone. Police are still attempting to locate the owners.

All in all, according to Constable Costello this New Years Eve was “tidier than last years” and that local feedback has “generally good”.

Having witnessed the utter chaos at Alma Bay 2 years ago and after watching our boys in blue in action this year I take my hat off to our local bobbies for a job well done! Thanks guys. Was there a little less focus on X Base tho this year? That's not necessisarily a bad thing however because their liscensing hangs on a thread from what I hear, and so it should! If a venue wants to bring 2000+ to Maggie and reap profit from it then they must put in place every conceivable harm minimisation approach for it's customers and local residents.
Well done fellas, NYE 2010 had potential to be a nightmare for residents and you handled it very well.

What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents, scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
