Field Day to launch low Carb Challenge

Can you taste the difference? Everyone going along to Magnetic Island Nature Care Association's Field Day at the Healthy Lifestyle Centre in Horseshoe Bay between 10am and 2pm on Saturday 10 April will be in the draw to win a Freeplay EyeMaxWind-up and Solar-Powered Radio valued at $149, according to MINCA member and co-organiser Linda Wootten.

The Field Day will also be the opportunity to find out more about and register for both the Inter-Bay Low Carbon Diet Challenge and the ‘Carbon Cuts’ Short-Film Competition. The Low Carbon Diet Challenge gives Islanders the opportunity to win up to $600 cash for cutting their household carbon footprint. For more information about the short-film competition (read here). Both projects are being put together by Magnetic Island Nature Care Association and are supported by the Department of Environment and Resource Management.

‘The day will bring together a number of Island and regional environmental organisations and offer information stalls, demonstrations, ‘flashchats’ (five minute addresses from experts in various environmentally-based areas) and Q&As, spot quizzes, displays, demonstrations and competitions’, Linda explained.

‘Following on from its runaway success at the RSL markets, we will be running the ‘blind water-tasting’ event. People are offered four types of water in unmarked bottles – high-end and low-end bottled water, tap water and rainwater – and challenged to identify them – and declare their favourite. When we have done it before, people have been amazed at their answers. It really makes you question the bottled water market.

MINCA members will also be demonstrating some ways of turning a single-use plastic check-out bag into something with a long and useful life – and how to cope without plastic bin liners altogether.

‘For the young in years – and at heart – there will be competitions to build a windmill out of scrap material, and a slow bicycle challenge. Richard from MI Bike Hire will be offering free safety checks and maintenance tips for schoolies bringing their bikes along. And Fiona from Magnetic Fitness will be giving some maintenance tips for our own bodies!’

There are some awesome prizes courtesy of DERM and Townsville Queensland Solar City.

Low Carbs eh? I never even liked low carb beer. Tasted crap and I put on 6kgs. Why would low carb anything else be any good?

Thanks to everyone for coming to the Field Day. The food was popular. While the best fun was the building the windmill and the slow Bike challenges.
