Damaging winds expected on Magnetic Island from Cyclone Ului

With Magnetic Island just 8 kms offshore from Townsville, the latest update from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), warns that Cyclone Ului could reintensify to a Category 3 level before crossing the coast. Damaging winds are expected to develop between Townsville and Yeppoon later today and should be taken seriously.

It is unusually quiet for a Saturday morning on Magnetic Island with barely a breath of wind to stir just yet and the usual Saturday morning socialising at the Nelly Bay shops almost non-existent.

It's likely that locals are busy at home making preparations for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Ului which is expected to cross the coast tomorrow morning.

Some may think this cyclone will not be of major consequence for Magnetic Island as the present track map from the BOM indicates a crossing near Proserpine to our south. But cyclones are always capable of surprises and a slight shift north would see us in its direct target area. Whatever happens tomorow it's likely to be very windy.

Tropical cyclone warning details and tracking map is available from the BOM (here).

Latest report #.40pm is that it is expected to cross coast below Ayr to Mackay around 1am or after so fingers crossed it is in the empty section below Bowen.
