National champ ready for Magnetic regatta

The Guilty Pleasures crew at work last year Townsville sailor Leon Thomas has notched up another win ahead of Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week 2009. Thomas now enters the fleet as the National Sports Boat Champion after having won the recent 2009 Australian and Queensland Trailable Yacht & Sports Boat Championship held in Yeppoon with his Thompson 7 sports boat, "Guilty Pleasures".

Thomas hopes to further their good run in performance at Airlie Beach Race Week as final preparation for their home regatta at Magnetic Island.

“As a team we are performing better and better with every race. The Championships gave us an opportunity to try out some new sails and gauge their performance. Come September we hope to be in top condition with our boat and equipment all working to their best.”

Provisions have been made to ensure secure parking on the mainland is available to competitors in the weeks leading up and during the regatta. Event organisers have also secured berthing at Magnetic Island for the duration of the regatta which is available to all registered boats.

The division will run under the SMS handicap system ensuring consistency within the sport. Principal Race Director, Denis Thompson, said having Thomas compete at Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week would certainly up the ante in the competition and the combination of flat water and good winds would be tailored will for sports boats.

The official social program will be released in July this year and some great live events are expected. There will also be a spectator boat operating over the weekend for family and friends to jump aboard and cheer on competitors.

The regatta runs from Friday 4th – Tuesday 8th September this year and is expected to top a fleet of 50 boats with entries so far reaching the half way mark. Crews can enter online at

Not that I know much about sailing as I get seasick!! but just thought I would mention that Alison Feeney who is no spring chicken flew to Gove last saturday. Then sailed with her friends Doug & Bernie on a "cat" to Darwin where they await the signal to begin the Regatta from there up to Indonesia early July. So good on ya you grotty yachties may the wind be on your side.
