Farmers market for Townsville: what do you think?

During the last local government elections Townsville Greens candidates proposed that a farmers market be established in Townsville. It seemed like an excellent idea that's time had come and now it looks like our council has had the good sense, with other northern councils, to take the idea further. That process starts with us taking three minutes to complete a survey on the idea.

A local farmers' market, by definition, is a market where only fresh food and value-added products that have been produced, grown, prepared or caught locally are sold.

Representatives from each of the Local Councils in North Queensland and State Government are proposing to undertake a collaborative feasibility study into the creation of a Farmers' Market (or markets) to service the North Queensland Region (Burdekin, Charters Towers, Townsville, Magnetic and Palm Island and Hinchinbrook local government areas).

The online survey has been developed on Townsville City Council's website to guage initial public support (or otherwise) for the proposal.

The three minute online survey (click here) is your big chance to have a say.

Why do we need a "collaborative feasibility study" ? Why do we need a survey, which won't tell them anything at all so far as I can see?

Currently the farmers producing stuff put it on a truck and it goes all the way to Brisbane markets, is sold at auction, then turns round and comes all the way back up here for us to buy.

The idea was to have a WHOLESALE market up here linked by video to the the markets down there, to save on the travel time and fuel. Nothing to do with a retail market here.

We are soon going to be impacted by Peak Oil and petrol/diesel rationing, and everything we do will need to be re-thought to save on fuel. This was supposed to pre-empt that.
