Garrett invited to open Solar centre on Magnetic
Peter Garrett, Federal Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts has been invited to open the Solar City Smart Lifestyle Centre on Magnetic Island at its official unveiling to the community on Saturday, September 13.
A Community Day celebration will be held on the Island to mark the opening of the Centre but at this point in time it is uncertain if the Minister and former rock legend will be available.
The Minister's visit has been rumoured on the Island for some time but, Solar City Community Engagement Manager, Julie Heath, was unable to confirm if Minister Garrett would be able to attend but, did say, that he had been invited.
Julie Heath was however definite about inviting Island based community groups, who might wish to make a promotional display of their respective activities at the opening, to contact her.
Townsville: Queensland Solar City project is part of the Australian Government's $93.8 million Solar Cities Program is an energy initiative designed to bring together industry, business, governments and communities to re-think the way they produce, consume and conserve energy.
Julie Heath said the Smart Lifestyle Centre was being created from a refurbishment of the former Magnetic Island Sport and Recreation Club at Horseshoe Bay.
"Once completed, the Centre will become the project office as well as an energy efficiency information and interpretive centre for the project," she said.
"The Magnetic Island Solar Suburb will save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 50,000 tonnes during the life of the project.
"This is equivalent to taking 1700 cars off the road for the same period."
Under an agreement with Townsville City Council, the building will be handed back to the council for community use once the Solar City project is finished, providing the island with a fully functioning facility.
Members of the Magnetic Island community are invited to take part in the celebrations for the opening of the Smart Lifestyle Centre on September 13. Activities will begin at 10am, with the official unveiling taking place at 11am.
For further details to register community groups' interest in a making a display at the event, visit the Solar City Info Centre at the Nelly Bay ferry terminal between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday or phone 4758 1674.
