A young koala's beach adventure

Last month we published a letter sent to New Townsville City Council by Island resident Rolf Petherbridge expressing concerns over the pruning of casuarina trees on the beach foreshore at Geofrey Bay. Well, now, Rolf has had a response from Mayor Les Tyrell and was so pleased he wanted us to share it with our readers.

Rolf's original letter (click here) was amplified by a number of other readers at the time.

Following is the Mayor's response and, and after that, Rolf's reply to the Mayor's Administrative Assistant:

Dear Mr Petherbridge,

Thank you for your email of 20 June 2008 regarding the Casuarinas on the Geoffrey Bay foreshore.

I have been advised that the Council's Greening and Waterways Team acted in response to an official complaint regarding a public health and safety issue caused by a single overhanging branch and a trip hazard at the same location.

On Wednesday the Parks Services East aboricultural supervisor inspected this site from a risk management perspective, to ascertain the need for any further clearing of dead and potentially harmful branches. Included in this assessment was consideration of guidelines aimed at removing areas of concealment and entrapment.

I assure you that the Council is reluctant to prune or remove live trees unless they are diseased, an inappropriate species or causing a significant hazard. If further pruning is required at Geoffrey Bay, a letter-drop of nearby residents will provide details of the work to be carried out at the site.

I hope this information addresses your concerns and I thank you again for taking an active interest in the protection of the Geoffrey Bay foreshore.

Yours sincerely
Les Tyrell
Mayor of Townsville

Dear Linda,
Thank you for sending the attached Mayor's reply.

I do recognise the enormity of the challenge Councillor Tyrell has accepted and am loathe to bother him with trifles.

None the less, should the opportunity arise, I would appreciate your conveying my sincere gratitude for his response.

I would like him to know that I see it as timely, exhibiting respect for all parties and expressing a civility that I find refreshihg and greatly encouraging.

What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents, scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
