Staff & community key to Bungalow Bay success

Brett and Janelle Flemming receive the Award Manager of Bungalow Bay Koala Village in Horseshoe Bay, the winner of Queensland Tourism's Backpacker Accommodation Award announced last weekend, Mr Brett Flemming, put much of the credit for the award down to staff and Bungalow Bay's community involvement.

"It's great for the staff and it is a credit to them. They are getting the recognition for really putting in a hard effort," he said.

Bungalow Bay was one of five North Queensland tourism operators who won their categories at the prestigious Queensland Tourism Awards 2007 which was staged in Townsville last Saturday evening, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle announced.

Brett Flemming saw the success as also being based on, "The personalised approach our staff take, involvement with wildlife care and community projects such as the Federal Water Grant (on and off-site creek revegetation) as well as our involvement with the local Backpacker organisation."

Bungalow Bay has built a strong support by combining budget accommodation with a wildlife sanctuary developed around a population of resident koalas and other native animals and through its underwriting of all medicine, food and equipment requirements for and Magnetic Island Fauna Care Organisation, an Island-based carers group who take care of sick and injured wildlife.

"The business has been operating for four years now and we are now running at 90% capacity," said Brett. "We also have the koala sanctuary and that has been a good factor."

Bungalow Bay is part of Wildlife Enterprises a family owned and operated business that also runs Billabong Sanctuary south of Townsville which picked up the Tourism Attraction Award last weekend.

Other north Queensland winners at Queensland Tourism Awards included: James Cook University (Tourism Education and Training Award); Noorla Heritage Resort (Standard Accommodation Award) and; Townsville and Far North Queensland for the Great Tropical Drive (New Tourism Development Award).

The two operations will now be in the running for the National Tourism Awards to be held in Canberra in February next year.

Congratulations Brett, Janelle and staff. As a small group of volunteers dedicated to the care of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife on MI, we are so grateful for your incredible generosity in sponsoring our food, supplies and medical bills for the care of our animals. Without your support our group would simply not be viable. THANK YOU and well done. Jenny Lyneham Carers Co-coordinator MIFCO.
