Magnetic's artists of the future

Francesca Napier tackles Geoffrey Bay Magnetic Island's reputation as the home of creative people seems well set for the future. On the June long weekend an exhibition by a group of young Island painters, known as Tropical Talent, under the tutorship of Island artist Vonnie Van Bemmel, will go on show. As a preview to the exhibition, Magnetic Times caught up to the artists on a landscape painting outing at Bright Point.

The group of twelve from Magnetic Island State School have been studying with Vonnie for two years but mostly at her studio in Arcadia. But yesterday the group were out in the stiff breeze at the front of No 1 Bright Point making the most of a moody sky and the changing light of Cleveland Bay.

Bryley loves landscape

One of the young painters, ten year old Bryley Vaudrey, who said she would like to be an artist when she leaves school, was boldly filling the canvas with a strong aqua and mauve image and told Magnetic Times, "I think landscape (painting) is probably the best," and, "I like the way you get to experiment with the colours to make new ones."

Breanna adds some cloud

Twelve year old, Breanna Koenen wasn't entirely pleased with her work in progress but thought that painting was her favourite art medium and, following the session yesterday, was, "...inspired to do more outdoor painting".

Another artist, Lez Carpenter, was discovering with Vonnie that he could leave, exposed, some of the primed canvas beneath the paint he'd applied to suggest the white water in his seascape.

The exhibition itself is also part of the learning process Vonnie has been imparting to the youngsters. "Setting up the exhibition is also part of the total exercise. The kids will be designing the pamphlets and advertising and will participate in the whole process of being an artist and making an exhibition," she said.

The exhibition will be held at the Conference Room at Mantra No 1 Bright Point from June 9 to 13.
