Young Islander wins national writer's award

Breanna with School Librarian Jenny Cramer There was a big surprise for a young Magnetic Islander at MI State School's Parade yesterday when eleven year old Breanna Koenen was announced the winner of a 2006 Young Aussie Writer's Award.

The competition in which children were invited to submit an original story, poem, comic or play was organised by Pearson Education Publishing through their Commet, Explore and Challenge magazines which are aimed at school children of different ages.

Over 2000 children from across Australia entered the competition which was judged by well-known Australian author Jane Godwin. Breanna was one of eight winners - three of which were also from Queensland.

Breanna told she was surprised at the news of her win and was having trouble remembering the details of the comic titled, "The winning goal" which won her the prize which includes having her comic published in an upcoming issue of one of the PearsonEd magazines. Breanna also received a range of other magazines and books from the publisher.

Breanna, who received a loud cheer from her school mates when the announcement was made, told she didn't know what she would like to be when she grows up but, "Being a comic writer would be OK".

Wow, Bree, what a talented girl you are.
Breanna also recently won a 'Highly Commended' Award , for a watercolour painting of Horseshoe Bay, at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery!
Will BEST & FAIREST at the footy make it a hat trick? I for one would not be surprised.
Well done girl, I am proud of you. Vonnie

What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents, scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
