Seeing a great stretch of bush suffocating beneath introduced weeds can be a very sad sight. But to join with others to systematically remove them is one of the most satisfying and rewarding outdoor activities to experience. The Magnetic Island National Park Volunteer Group, which has recently formed, is doing just this and are looking for more members. Following is a report by Co-ordinator Carolyn Dixon on their most recent activities.

With over 170 Islanders filling the Magnetic Island Country Club for a big night of trivia and the chance to rub shoulders with friends, neighbours and wider members of the community, the simplest way to describe Friday's Maggie Quiz Night, sponsored by Queensland Health and organised by the Community Development Association, was, a great big fun night out with the community.

“We’re providing a series of forums where local operators can voice their opinions and concerns to help shape the future of tourism in North Queensland,” is how a Townsville Enterprise's (Tel) Brent Randall described a new project aimed at strengthening tourism partnerships across local government areas within North Queensland. The project includes a workshop on Magnetic Island this Thursday.

According to Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which represents cruise lines including P&O, Princes Cruises and Cunard, plans for a cruise ship terminal at Townsville did not allow for the berthing of large ocean liners.

The Solar City Project | May 9th

"It's worth it just for the learning," was how Magnetic Island's first recipient of solar panels under the Solar Cities project, Ms Lindy King of Nelly Bay, described the impact of having a "smart meter" in her house - a feature of the program which is set to see 500 Magnetic homes fitted with solar panels and retrofitted with energy saving and measuring devices.

According to (Townsville) Coastguard's Mr David Ede, the Chair of the New Vessel Fund raising Committee, "The Magnetic Island Rotary Club shows leadership and has recognised the service that the Australian Volunteer Coastguard provides to the Magnetic Island community," following Magnetic's Rotarians having raised $3000 towards the replacement vessel of the "Spirit of Rotary", the Townsville Coastguard's primary rescue vessel.

Margaret Moorhouse In reply to Tell Tel what you think on Thursday I'm inclined to agree with Comment 1. Another way for some to keep themselves employed and bolster each other's beliefs. What about some real and relevant outcomes? Taking into account several climate-change/ sealevel-rise scenarios? - not just a search for quick-buck opportunities? how about an industry policy statement about ethical action for climate change? Does "opportunities" include exploiting weaknesses, loopholes and gaps in environmental legislation and planning instruments? What about looking ahead into FNQ 2025 Plan? Tourism is not as benign an activity as we once thought. Will the industry set standards?
