President on the prowl

New President Steve Farrant Magnetic Island businesses be warned. One of the Island's most formidable fund raisers is heading your way. He's planning to visit every Island business to see what sort of support, in kind, in sponsorship or other he can garner for his Club in Horseshoe Bay. His name is Steve Farrant and he has just been elected President of the Magnetic Island Sports and Recreation Club.

Steve is an Island identity - a perfect cast from a rough diamond mould and someone never short on energy and drive. With strong support from his daughter Jodie and several other Club stalwarts, Steve has been a driving force for a number of years in organising the biggest sporting day on the Island: The Rugby League Bay of Origin. But Steve's aim now is to make the Sport and Rec Club a place for all Islanders young and old. He heads a new Club committee and was elected unopposed as President last Saturday at the Club's Annual General Meeting.

"My main aim is to get the community behind the Club. It's great for functions like weddings and parties and we want to reach out to the community so it doesn't just cater for sports people or kids but for older people such as the Tuesday Club as well as cultural organisations."

Steve was also pleased to thank Councillor Jenny Hill following a report that the Club is now likely to receive an irrigation sprinkler worth $8,000 from Townsville City Council which will encourage grass and softer playing surfaces for all sports users.

Also, according to Steve, surveyors' reports are also being undertaken to extend the Club's licenced area.

The Club will now be holding regular Committee meetings on the second Tuesday of every month.

The new committee now comprises:
President: Steve Farrant
Vice President: Mark Brizzy
Treasurer: Peg Kearns and John Lloyd
Secretary: Kim Nation with assistance from Jodie Farrant and Sue Mackay
with ordinary committee members including: Glen and Rose Faulds, Julie Bowler, Mark and Roxanne Hislop, Ernie Jones, Di Mackie and Kylie Lewis who is expected to take over shortly as the nominee for the bar after completing appropriate training qualifications.

Tonia In reply to The ongoing price of Nelly Bay Harbour
It's 14 years since I last visited Maggy. I am shocked by Nelly Bay and saddened. It is insensitive, ugly and juxtaposed to the essence of Maggy. I embrace progress in general, but this is poorly conceived and executed. Shame.
